Los Pueblos (White Towns), People & Arts

On the highlands of the pacific of Nicaragua, one can find the picturesque “white towns”. These towns were given this name since the early colonial period since the Spaniards decided to paint their homes in white. Nowadays to say “white towns” equals folklore and Nicaraguan tradition. Traditions of the past still persist in towns such as: Diriamba, Jinotepe, Masatepe, Niquinohomo, San Juan de Oriente and Catarina. The interesting fact is that each town has its own specialty when it comes to art, food and tradition. In the past, these towns were known as “witch doctor’s towns”, since a lot of the people were chamans and did that for a living. Nowadays, there are not many witch witch doctors left, but some people suspect that certain individuals in the towns are still devoted to these practices. There is a good balance between the rainy and dry season and this entire elements combined make this beautiful area with fruits and trees. The landscape is very attractive and people are very humble and friendly. It is along these towns that we take today’s tour making strategic stops in the most interesting places. We will learn how people make bamboo baskets and furniture . We will go by Somoza and Sandino’s native towns. We will do shopping in San Juan de Oriente and Catarina (pottery). Here you will find beautiful arts and crafts and nurseries with beautiful flowers. We will also see the view from Catarina of the surrounding water and volcano landscape.
